How to Prepare for Your First HGV Driver Job Interview: Advice from a Logistics Employer

We’ve been in the transport and haulage industry long enough to know what makes a great HGV driver — and just as importantly, what makes a good first impression during a job interview. If you’ve recently passed your HGV training and are getting ready for your first driver interview, congratulations — you’re stepping into a vital and rewarding career.

To help you succeed, here’s some advice straight from the employer’s side of the table. These are the things we look for when we meet a potential new driver for the first time.

1. Understand the Role You’re Applying For
Before you even step into the interview room, make sure you know exactly what the job entails. Is it long-haul or local deliveries? Are you expected to handle any manual loading or operate additional equipment (like a HIAB)? Do some research about the company and the specific role you’re applying for.

We’re always impressed by candidates who come in knowing something about our operations, our fleet, and the types of goods we transport.

2. Bring the Right Documents
Make sure you arrive with all necessary paperwork. This typically includes:

  • Your HGV licence (Category C, C+E, etc.)
  • Your Driver CPC card
  • A valid digital tachograph card
  • Your driving record (you can get a summary online from the DVLA)
  • Any certificates for additional qualifications, like ADR or forklift training

Having these to hand shows you’re organised and ready to hit the road.

3. Dress Appropriately
You don’t need to turn up in a suit and tie — this isn’t a corporate boardroom. However, clean, tidy, and practical clothing makes a better impression than turning up in scruffy jeans and a hoodie. First impressions matter, even in logistics.

4. Be Honest About Your Experience
We don’t expect every new driver to have years of experience. If this is your first HGV job, be upfront about it — but highlight any other relevant experience. Have you driven vans or smaller commercial vehicles? Have you worked in warehousing, or done route planning?

Show us that you understand what the job involves and that you’re ready to learn.

5. Know the Basics of Vehicle Checks and Tachographs
We often ask simple questions during the interview to gauge your practical knowledge. You don’t need to know everything, but being able to talk confidently about daily walkaround checks, legal driving hours, and the use of a tachograph shows us you’ve taken your training seriously.

6. Demonstrate a Safety-First Attitude
Safety is non-negotiable in our industry. We want to know that you take it seriously too. Be prepared to talk about how you would handle scenarios like:

  • Noticing a fault during a daily vehicle check
  • Being asked to drive when you’re close to exceeding legal hours
  • Dealing with difficult conditions on the road

Show us that you prioritise safe, compliant driving above all else.

7. Ask the Right Questions
An interview is a two-way street. Come prepared with questions about the job — for example:

  • What routes will I be covering?
  • Will I be working fixed shifts or rotating patterns?
  • What kind of induction or support is provided for new drivers?
  • Is there any ongoing training or career progression?

This shows us that you’re thinking seriously about the role and your future with us.

8. Be Punctual and Courteous
It sounds obvious, but punctuality is vital in our industry — and it starts with your interview. Arrive on time, be polite, and show respect to everyone you meet, from the receptionist to the transport manager. Reliability and attitude count for a lot.

Final Thoughts
Your first HGV driver interview doesn’t have to be daunting. We’re not looking for the finished article — we’re looking for people with the right attitude, a willingness to learn, and a genuine interest in professional driving.

If you come prepared, show us that you take safety and compliance seriously, and ask the right questions, you’ll already be ahead of the pack. Good luck — and we look forward to seeing you on the road!
